CONSEQUENCES OF SIN
Does sin have consequences? Do we have to bear the burden of those consequences? Do we have to live with the results of our sins for the rest of our lives? Do we have to pay the penalty or endure the consequences of sin, our sins?
Are we stuck with what we have made for ourselves? Do we have to sleep in the bed we made for the rest of our lives? If we smoke cigarettes, do we have the right to expect healing from lung cancer, or are we doomed? A consequence is something we deserve attached to something we did, or, as Dictionary.com says, “the effect, result, or outcome of something occurring earlier.”
2 Corinthians 5:19-21* For God was in Christ, restoring the world to Himself, no longer counting men*’s sins against them but blotting them out. This is the wonderful message He has given us to tell others….For our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin so that we might become the righteousness of God in him NLT
Jesus Became Sin
The Bible says in the passage above that Jesus became sin so that we might become right with God. This is a huge statement. Jesus didn’t just take our sins: He became sin. What does that mean? Why did Jesus become sin? He didn’t want to cleanse us, He wanted to transform us, change us, and recreate us. It is called the great exchange, and we get all the benefits.
- He became filthy to make us clean.
- He was declared guilty so that we could become innocent.
- He was shamed and cursed that we could be free of guilt and shame forever.
Did Jesus take our sins or not?
We are now righteous. We are the righteousness of God in Christ. The Bible says so. Every time you see the word “righteous” in the Bible, it speaks of you. YOU!The question to ask is, did Jesus take our sins with Him to the cross or do our sins remain our burden to bear? Who got punished for your sins and mine? Are you being punished, or did Jesus receive the punishment for your sins? You have to establish this once and for all.
Do I, or do I not, have to bear the consequences of my sins?
Romans 8:1 There is, therefore, now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
No Condemnation in Christ
The word “condemn” means to pronounce guilty or to sentence someone and inflict on them a punishment. The court has the authority to condemn a person who has been judged guilty. According to the Bible, there is no condemnation for us because we are “in Christ.” We are all guilty. We all deserve the death sentence for our sin. God says in Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus took the death sentence for us. He died, so that we could live. God condemned Jesus, so we could be set free.
No Damnation in Christ
Though we all deserve to be condemned and die, Jesus was condemned and died in our place. Jesus didn’t need to die. He didn’t have to die. Jesus is the lamb sacrificed for the whole world’s sins.
There is no judgment for those in Christ Jesus, no accusation, no blame, and no damnation. NOT because you are better than everyone else and NOT because you don’t deserve judgment and punishment, but because you are HIS. There is now no condemnation for us because God punished Jesus instead of us. God judged Jesus in our place.
Jesus Fulfilled the Requirement of the Law
Jesus fulfilled God’s Law. Jesus fulfilled the Law’s requirement successfully and entirely as only He could. What does that mean? God laid down the Law when He gave us the Ten Commandments and all the other rules and laws. God gave us rules to live by, and he expects us to obey them. God gave Moses specific instructions throughout Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers on how to live, what to expect if they sinned, and how to make reparation. God gave us the Law and what to expect when we break the Law. To read a synopsis of God’s Law, check out Deuteronomy chapter 27 and chapter 28, where Moses lists all of God’s do’s and don’t and the consequences of breaking them.

The Purpose of the Law
We could never keep all of God’s commandments, but Jesus could and did. He did it for us. He didn’t have to come to Earth to die on a cross, but He chose to, for us. God knew in the beginning that when He gave us the Law, we would never be able to keep it. He knew it then, and He knows it now. The Law was given to show us our need for a savior. God knew we could never obey the Law alone, but he wanted us to know this. God wanted us to come to the end of ourselves, and our striving and instead trust in God for salvation.
God instituted the Law to show us that we can’t obey it. Only when we finally understand this will we look to Jesus for salvation. If we think we can get to heaven on our own, we are mistaken. The Law was a way to show us our need for Him and to remain in Him.
Without Jesus, you cannot obey the Law, but with Jesus, you CAN obey the Law. We can do all things through Christ, who strengthens us. (Phil 4:13) even obey the Law, but please don’t take my word for it….
Romans 8:7- 8 For the concern of the flesh is hostility toward God; it does not submit to the law of God, nor can it; 8 and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. NABRE
Galatians3:19 Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. NLT
Galatians 3:21-22 Is the law then opposed to the promises ? Of course not! For if a law had been given that could bring life, then righteousness would in reality come from the law. 22 But scripture confined all things under the power of sin, that through faith in Jesus Christ the promise might be given to those who believe.
Romans 3:19-20 * Now we know that what the law[d] says is addressed to those under the law so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world stand accountable to God, 20 since no human being will be justified in his sight[e] by observing the law; for through the law comes consciousness of sin.*
Galatians 2:21* I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die. NLT*
Don’t Remain Condemned
Don’t let your past rob you of today or tomorrow. Get over it. Youhave to. Don’t hold on to condemnation. If you still maintain regrets, such as “I should have…” “Why didn’t I…” or “How could I…” then you are holding on to sin and choosing to remain in condemnation. Every time you blame yourself, you are, in effect, rejecting Jesus and His forgiveness.
Receive Forgiveness, Receive Healing
Jesus didn’t have to come to Earth to die on a cross, but He chose to. Now, it’s up to you to receive the forgiveness He won for you. It’s your turn to believe it. Trust Jesus with your past, and He will make it right. He will turn it all for your good. Those whom you hurt, rejected, or sinned against, God can restore miraculously. God is pretty powerful, and remember, He can do anything.
He didn’t forgive you so you could remain miserable, guilty and sick. Trust Him to make it all better. He did it for me; He will do it for you. God found me at my worst and made me a deal I couldn’t refuse. I had just had an affair with a married man, chose to abort my child and other things too horrible to even mention. You have to be convinced Jesus took away your sins, as well as the consequences of your sins; otherwise, you will never have faith to receive healing. Instead, you will forever think that sickness is something you deserve. The devil is the accuser, and his job is to accuse you. He is relentless. You have a choice to believe the voice of the accuser speaking in your head or the truth that Jesus is the Paschal lamb sacrificed for you.
Jesus took the Consequences of Our Sins
Jesus took the penalty due unto you. Jesus took the punishment for our sins. Jesus took the consequences of our sins. God is that good.
Are there consequences to sin? Of course. But you don’t have to bear them. When we sin, we open ourselves up to whatever the devil has for us, including sickness. I remember once having no compassion for my husband when he was sick. I said something to him like, “Really? You are going to lie around all day?” The next day, I was ill. The Bible says, “We reap what we sow.” When I criticized my husband for being sick, I opened myself up for sickness to come right in. It was as if I was saying, “Come and get me.” Sickness came through that opened door. I came to my senses, reached out to God, and asked for mercy. He doesn’t hold anything against us, and He didn’t hold that against me.
God is not out to punish us but to grow us up and discipline us because He has only our best interests at heart, all the time. God forgave me immediately and I was healed.
