Prayer for Healing: Come for Mercy, Not What You Deserve

By Marybeth Wuenschel

Here is a prayer for healing I pray all the time, and I want to share it with you.

Father, I am coming to You because Jesus said I could. Jesus said I could come to you and ask for anything in His name. So Father I come to You, not for what I deserve, but for the mercy and grace that Jesus won for me at the cross.

God can't resist us when we come to him with faith in the name of Jesus. He can't resist Jesus.

He Healed Them All, Even Those Who Didn't Deserve It

Let's look at Matthew 8:

This is right after Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law. Everybody heard about it, and the whole town heard the news and that night brought to Him, the sick and those who were being harassed by demons.

And the Bible says He healed them all.

I was telling my friend, it's just dawning on me that there were many in that crowd who didn't deserve to be healed.

Yet He healed them. He healed them all.

If you were there that day, you would have been healed.

And my friend said, "Marybeth, none of them deserved to be healed."

Not one person in that crowd deserved healing. NOT ONE. There's not one person listening who deserves healing.

But we don't get what we deserve.

That's why I pray the way I do. I don't come for what I deserve. I come for the mercy and grace Jesus won for me. (I share more about this in never allow yourself to feel unworthy.)

Matthew 8 goes on to say this was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

MATTHEW 8:17 He took our infirmities and bore our diseases.

He took this.

Literally, He took it at the cross.

So how dare the devil threaten you with sickness and disease.

The devil wants to threaten and harass you. Jesus said the devil comes to "kill, steal and destroy, but came that you would have life and that more abundant." The devil doesn't want you living the good life. He wants you sad, distraught, and depressed and full

But you will not be. When you recognize the devil and his strategies, you will not fall for them. You have to know that God wants you healed and healthy. When Jesus walked on the earth he respresented God the Father and His will for you. Jesus healed everyone who came to him for healing because that was God's will. Jesus only did God's will.

Your Father wants you to tart living. Start living today, right now.

If He Gave You Jesus, Why Would He Not Give You Healing?

ROMANS 8:31-32 What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won't he also give us everything else? (NLT)

If He gave you Jesus, why would He withhold from you healing? He won't. HE WON'T. Jesus wants to glorify the Father by healing you. If you are sick you have the opportunity to glorify God through healing. Take it by trusting God to heal you.

The devil will put up a fight,he will try to talk you out of believing with symptoms and stories, but you have the truth on your side.

Take the Word of God Like Medicine

I want to encourage you to read the Bible. When you are sick, battling an illness, or praying for someone who is, take the Word of God like medicine.

The Word of God is life and health to your whole body. Take it regularly and often. You cannot overdo it.

You need to counteract the lies coming into your mind. Too often, we find ourselves believing the liar instead of believing God.

But God is calling us to believe Him.

Become a student of His Word. Hunger and thirst for it. Read through the healing scriptures. Give His promises your attention and keep them in your heart.

This is what Proverbs 4 says:

“My son, to my words be attentive, to my sayings incline your ear. Let them not slip from your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them, bringing health to one’s whole being.”

—Proverbs 4:20–22

Health to your whole being. God cares about your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Read through the healing scriptures

"Go and Bring Your Word of God"

I remember an 11-year-old girl at our church who had leukemia.

One morning, I heard the Lord say, “Go to that hospital and bring your Word of God. Go and heal that baby.”

Then He said, “If not you, who? If not now, when?”

He said, “Go.”

So I called her mother and said, “We’re coming, so expect a miracle.”

I brought three women with me. We didn’t even go into her room. We sat in the lobby and read healing scripture after healing scripture aloud. We praised God. We sang. We commanded the devil to leave that hospital in Jesus’ name.

We laid hands on the door and windows of her hospital room. Then we said, “Well, it’s time to go. We did what we came to do.”

As we were leaving, her mother came out and said, “You’re not going to believe this, but we just got the report that there is no cancer in her body.”

She has since graduated from college and, to my knowledge, has remained cancer-free.

Thank You, Jesus.

Keep Your Faith Anchored in His Word

Be patient as you walk it out. Keep your faith anchored in God’s promises.

Jesus has already said yes. All the promises of God are yes and amen in Christ.

Healing is a gift. You do not earn it.

Jesus took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. Keep looking to Him and what He has done for you.

Resist the lies that would steal your peace and undermine your faith. Rebuke the devil in Jesus’ name.

“No, you cannot have my health. You cannot have my peace.”

Keep receiving God’s Word. Keep thanking Him. You can stand in faith while receiving medical care and taking practical steps to care for your body.A Prayer for Healing for Someone You Love

A mother once asked us to pray for her son. He was suffering from depression, and he wasn't taking care of himself.

This is how Kani prayed for him with us:

"Father, we come against the spirit of depression. We command him free from the spirit of depression in the name of Jesus. Lord, reveal Your love for him in his heart. Let him receive Your love, Father.

We speak health and healing in his body right now in the name of Jesus. Holy Spirit, help him. Show him how to take care of his body and how to live according to Your way. Give him the desire to do the right thing for his body. In Jesus' name. Amen."

Now make this your prayer.

You're asking us to pray because you believe God is going to hear our prayer. But He hears your prayer too.

God says that when two or more agree about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by His Father.

So right now, God is saying yes to your prayer for your loved one.

Now you've got to believe. There's no such thing as prayer without faith. Prayer without faith is no prayer at all.

Write the prayer down so you can agree with it. Once you've given it to God and you agree that He is doing a work and bringing healing, you can sit back, rejoice and thank God.

That's all you do.

Thank You that he is filled with joy. Thank You that he is on fire, filled with life and a desire to live.

Common questions

Common Questions

Do I have to deserve healing to receive it?

No. Healing is not a reward for being good enough. In Matthew 8, Jesus healed people who came to Him in need. We come to Him trusting His mercy and grace, rather than our own merit.

What do I do after I pray for healing?

Trust that God hears you. Keep agreeing with His Word and thanking Him. Read the healing scriptures, continue caring for your body, and keep your heart anchored in His love as you walk it out.

Keep His Word before your eyes, in your ears, and within your heart.
