You Will Do Greater Things

By Marybeth Wuenschel

Jesus was dependent on the Father. He did nothing by himself. He only did what he saw the Father doing. Jesus did great things but you and I will do greater things because the same Holy Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us.

John 5:19-20

Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these so that you will be amazed.

Because of His dependence on the Father, Jesus could do everything. Signs and wonders followed him. Everywhere He went, people were healed and delivered from evil spirits.  Jesus was totally dependent on the Father. He didn’t make a move without his word. Jesus now has given us this same authority promising us that we will do even greater works than he did if we only believe in Him.

Listen to what Paul did in Malta,

Acts 28:8-10

It so happened that the Father of Publius was sick with a fever and dysentery. Paul visited him and, after praying, laid his hands on him and healed him.  After this had taken place, the rest of the sick on the island came to Paul and were cured.  They paid us great honor and when we eventually set sail they brought us the provisions we needed.

Sound Familiar – The same as Jesus in Matthew 8

Matthew 8:14-17

Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.  He touched her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and waited on him. When it was evening, they brought him many who were possessed by demons, and he drove out the spirits by a word and cured all the sick,  to fulfill what had been said by Isaiah the prophet:“He took away our infirmities and bore our diseases.”

and Peter in Acts 5.

Acts 5:15-16

As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.

Jesus healed them all in Matthew chapter 8. After He healed Peter’s mother-in-law, People came from the surrounding villages that night bringing the lame and the sick and the demon possessed and Jesus healed them all. The same happened to Peter and Paul.  The Father wants to replicate this in you and me through the same Spirit that lives in us because we have faith in Jesus and in the power of his name. It is not you! It is Jesus working through you if you but allow him to. Believe that you are made worthy for such as this. You, too, can heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. You were called for such a time as this. After Peter healed the lame man who was crippled for nearly 40 years, he said this to the crowds.

Acts 3:12

Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, “what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness.

It had nothing to do with Peter’s goodliness or godliness or his level of piety. It had nothing to do with Peter but EVERYTHING TO DO with the Name of Jesus. The same is true with you. Are you willing?

Acts 3:16

Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes.

What can you and I do with Faith in this name? This story has yet to be written. Enter your text here…
