How to Pray a Novena: A Simple Guide
What a novena is, where the nine days come from, and how to pray one — a plain guide to this treasured Catholic practice of persistent prayer.
A novena is nine consecutive days of prayer for a particular intention. The word comes from the Latin novem — nine — and the practice traces to the nine days the apostles and Mary spent in prayer between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1:14). A novena is not a magic count; it is the Church's school of persistent, expectant prayer.
Where Novenas Come From
After Jesus ascended, He told His followers to wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit. They "all with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer" for nine days — and on the tenth, Pentecost came. Every novena since echoes that first one: gathered intention, daily faithfulness, and confident waiting on God.
How to Pray a Novena, Step by Step
- Name your intention. Be specific — a healing, a decision, a person, a need. Write it down on day one.
- Choose your novena. Traditional novenas exist for many needs and saints — for healing, the St. Peregrine Novena is the Church's best-known. A novena can also be as simple as the same heartfelt prayer prayed nine days running.
- Pray daily, at the same time if you can. Morning coffee, lunch break, bedside — consistency is the practice. Each day usually takes five minutes or less.
- Miss a day? Keep going. Pick it up the next day and continue. God is not disqualifying you on a technicality; the novena forms you, not Him.
- End with thanksgiving. On day nine, thank God — for what He has done, and for what He is doing that you cannot yet see.
What a Novena Is — and Isn't
A novena is persistent prayer, which Jesus explicitly encouraged: the friend at midnight, the persistent widow, "ask, and it will be given you" (Luke 11; Luke 18; Matthew 7:7). It is not a transaction or a guarantee-by-repetition — the Catechism warns against treating any prayer as a formula that obligates God. Nine days of prayer change the pray-er: they focus the heart, build faith, and hold an intention before God with the persistence He invites.
