Scriptures for Fear and Anxiety: Verses to Steady Your Mind

A reference collection of Bible verses for fear, worry, and anxious thoughts — organized for daily prayer, with links to teaching on winning the battle for your mind.

"Do not be afraid" is one of the most repeated instructions in all of Scripture. God does not shame the fearful — He speaks to them, again and again, with the same steady message: I am with you. This page collects the passages to reach for when fear or anxiety presses in.

Verse quotations are from the World English Bible (public domain). Read each in your own Bible for full context.

When Fear Presses In

  • Isaiah 41:10 — "Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you."
  • Psalm 34:4 — "I sought the LORD, and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears."
  • Psalm 56:3 — "When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you."
  • Deuteronomy 31:6 — "Be strong and courageous. Don't be afraid or scared of them, for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you."
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 — "For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."

When Anxiety Won't Quiet Down

  • Philippians 4:6-7 — "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."
  • 1 Peter 5:7 — "Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you."
  • Matthew 6:34 — "Therefore don't be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself."
  • Psalm 94:19 — "In the multitude of my thoughts within me, your comforts delight my soul."
  • John 14:27 — "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you... Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful."

Verses for the Battle of the Mind

  • 2 Corinthians 10:5 — "...taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ."
  • Romans 12:2 — "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind."
  • Isaiah 26:3 — "You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you."
  • Colossians 3:2 — "Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are on the earth."

Praying These Verses

Anxious thoughts rarely leave because we argue with them — they leave when they are replaced. Choose two or three of these verses, write them down, and speak them aloud when the anxious spiral starts. Replacing a thought with God's word is a practice, and it strengthens with repetition.

Marybeth teaches on this battle from her own experience in Battle for Your Mind, Take Control of Negative Thoughts, and her book Your Thoughts Are Killing You — the deeper companion to every verse on this page.
