Trust God No Matter What

By Marybeth Wuenschel

Trust Him. Trust Him like never before. No matter what, God wants you to get to the place where you trust Him, no matter what.

Trust in the Lord With All Your Heart: The Promise of Proverbs 3

I’m going to start with some Scripture from Proverbs chapter 3, beginning with verse 5. It says:

PROVERBS 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.

PROVERBS 3:6-7 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.

Then comes the promise. God is about to tell us what we will receive:

PROVERBS 3:8 Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.

One version says, “This will mean health to your body and vigor to your bones.”

Turn away from evil. Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. That means humble yourself. Seek the Lord. Humble yourself. Turn away from evil. This means health to your body and nourishment to your bones.

What It Means to Trust God No Matter What

It begins with this: Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.

That means don’t depend on anything else. Trusting in the Lord with all your heart means trusting Him no matter what. No matter what it looks like, no matter what it feels like, no matter what it sounds like, trust in His goodness. Trust in His love for you.

Trust that He cares. Trust that He’s for you, not against you. Trust that God is on your side. Trust that God has your very, very, very best interests at heart. He cares about you. He only wants what’s best for you. He wants good things for you and only good things.

Trust in His goodness. Throughout the whole Bible, that’s what God wants from you: to trust Him, to trust that His Word is true, and to trust that He cares. Trust that He loves you more than anything. He loves you as His very own child, His very own son, His very own daughter. He loves you, and He wants you to trust Him.

God Is Not Punishing You — He Punished Jesus Instead

Trust that He’s not using the situation you’re in to make things hard for you or to punish you. God has laid down all punishment. He punished Jesus instead of you. It is done. All punishment landed on Jesus. God is never out to punish you. He’s out to build you up and discipline you, but He doesn’t use something bad that’s happening to you against you.

He isn’t using your suffering as an opportunity to punish you or teach you a lesson. But God will use whatever we’re in the middle of as an opportunity to teach us. He’s always going to teach us in the midst of what we’re going through. (There is no such thing as redemptive suffering.)

The Story of King Hezekiah: When the Enemy Laid Siege to Jerusalem

Today, I want to tell a story about King Sennacherib of Assyria and King Hezekiah of Judah. Israel and Judah had separated, and Hezekiah ruled Judah, where Jerusalem was located. This was part of the ancient land of Canaan.

Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was coming to invade Judah. His name sounds like a snake, and he acted like one. He laid siege to the fortified towns, giving orders for his army to break through the walls.

Laying siege means surrounding a place, not letting anything go in and not letting anybody come out. They were holding the people hostage, and Sennacherib had given orders to break through the walls.

When Hezekiah realized that Sennacherib intended to attack, he consulted his officials and military advisers. He appointed military officers over the people and assembled everyone together in the city.

Be Strong and Courageous: Our God Is Bigger Than the Army at the Gate

Hezekiah encouraged them, saying, “Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria or his mighty army.”

Don’t be afraid of this king. Don’t be afraid of his army. There is a power far greater on our side. He may have a great army, but they are merely men. We have the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles for us.

Hezekiah’s words greatly encouraged the people.

Don’t be afraid. Our God is bigger. Our God is better. Our God is more powerful. And guess what? He’s on our side. He’s on our side. We’ve got God on our side. This is what the devil doesn’t want you to believe. He doesn’t want you to believe that God is on your side. His whole job is to get you to doubt that God is with you and for you.

“What Are You Trusting In?” — How the Enemy Threatens Your Faith

Sennacherib sent his officers to Jerusalem with a message for Hezekiah and all the people of the city. This is what the king of Assyria said:

2 CHRONICLES 32:10-12 “This is what King Sennacherib of Assyria says: What are you trusting in that makes you think you can survive my siege of Jerusalem? Hezekiah has said, ‘The Lord our God will rescue us from the king of Assyria.’ Surely Hezekiah is misleading you, sentencing you to death by famine and thirst! Don’t you realize that Hezekiah is the very person who destroyed all the Lord’s shrines and altars?” (NLT)

2 CHRONICLES 32:13-15 “Surely you must realize what I and the other kings of Assyria before me have done to all the people of the earth! Were any of the gods of those nations able to rescue their people from my power? Which of their gods was able to rescue its people from the destructive power of my predecessors? What makes you think your God can rescue you from me? Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you! Don’t let him fool you like this! I say it again — no god of any nation or kingdom has ever yet been able to rescue his people from me or my ancestors. How much less will your God rescue you from my power!” (NLT)

Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, is threatening Jerusalem and Hezekiah, the king of Judah. He said, “Surely Hezekiah is misleading you, sentencing you to death by famine and thirst.” The king of Assyria was in essence saying, “Don’t believe your king. He’s lying to you. God’s not going to help you.”

Sennacherib told them, “Nobody in the whole world, no nation, is able to stand up against us. What makes you think you will? No one else’s gods ever helped them. What makes you think your God is going to help?”

No other god has been able to conquer us, so what makes you think your God can? Your God can’t rescue you from our power. No one has ever been able to, not this year, not this generation, nor generations in the past. No one has ever been able to thwart our power. Don’t listen to Hezekiah, he is lying to you. “Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you. Don’t let him fool you like this.” He insisted that no god of any nation or kingdom had ever been able to rescue his people from him or his ancestors. Then he asked how much less their God would rescue them from his power.

Wow. He was talking smack. He was defying the God of Israel, the God of Hezekiah, the God of Judah, and the God of Jerusalem. He was defying the God of all gods, the Creator of the universe.

The Enemy Shouts His Threats So That You Will Doubt God

The king of Assyria continued scorning the Lord. “Just as the gods of all the other nations failed to rescue their people from my power, so the God of Hezekiah will also fail.”

The Assyrian officials shouted these threats in Hebrew. They wanted everyone on the city walls and in the streets to hear them so that they would doubt God and doubt Hezekiah.

Hezekiah was saying, “Hey, God’s on our side.” But the men of the king of Assyria, the nation invading Judah, were saying the opposite: “You’re going to die. Today’s the day. We’re coming to get you.”

There will always be this battle in your mind. There will always be opposition to Christ. The devil will send fiery darts, planting doubt and condemning you in the middle of your pain, torment, anguish, and sickness. He wants you to doubt God and quit trusting Him. He is merciless, and he only wants you dead. (Here is how to stop him.)

Listen again to what the king of Assyria said: “Just as the gods of all the other nations failed to rescue their people from my power, so the God of Hezekiah will also fail.”

These officers talked about the God of Jerusalem as though He were one of the pagan gods made by human hands. They didn’t know who they were dealing with.

God Answered One Prayer and the Siege Was Over

That brings us to verse 19. Now let’s finish the story.

Hezekiah and the prophet Isaiah, son of Amoz, cried out in prayer to God. The Lord sent an angel who destroyed the Assyrian fighting force, along with its commanders and officers. Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was forced to return home to his own land in disgrace.

The Devil Is Out to Destroy Your Trust in God’s Character

The devil is out to destroy your trust in God’s character.

Have you ever watched a movie in which the hero has an antagonist, an evil person who sows lies, deception, and deceit? He’s trying to get everyone to believe that the hero is a liar.

As an audience member, you start to get anxious because you’re afraid everyone will believe those lies and doubt the hero. You know the truth, but you’re afraid they’ll believe the liar.

The liar is so good at getting you to believe that God is not for you and that He doesn’t care about you. Every single day, the devil tries to destroy your trust in God’s character. He will twist God’s Word, accuse you, and get you to believe that God will not come through for you.

God Really Does Care About You

Today, I was thinking about how He wants us to trust His goodness. He wants us to trust that He cares about us, that He only wants what is good for us, and that He loves us with His whole heart.

We’re not used to that. We don’t always have people around us who put us first. Most people put themselves first.

If you understand the husband-and-wife dynamic, you know that when you live together in the same house, you sometimes look forward to having the house all to yourself. You can do whatever you want. You can lie around.

One day, I was struggling with what to do: whether to stay home or go out. I couldn’t make up my mind. I remember my husband saying, “Just stay home. You don’t have to go anywhere. You don’t have to go on that trip. You don’t have to do it. You can say no and stay home.”

I remember thinking about how much he cared about me. I thought, “Man, my husband cares about me.”

I had assumed he would encourage me to go so he could stay home, watch whatever he wanted on TV, eat whatever he wanted, drink whatever he wanted, and do whatever he wanted. But instead, I thought, “Wow, he really cares about me.”

That’s God. God really cares about you. He wants what’s best for you. He’s not who you may think He is. He’s not out to get you. He’s on your side. Praise God.

Trusting God No Matter What Takes Real Courage

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not lean on your own understanding. Once you do, the devil will try to distort that understanding. He will send lies and stir up feelings. He will get you to focus on what you see and hear until you start believing the things around you. (This is why your thoughts matter so much.)

God is saying, “Trust Me. Trust Me. No matter what it looks like, no matter what you’re going through, no matter how painful it is, trust Me. I’m coming through for you.

“No matter what the storm is, dig deep. Dig deeper into Me. Trust Me anyway. Trust Me no matter what. Trust that I care about you. Trust that I’m here. Trust that I haven’t forgotten you. Trust that I haven’t turned My head away from you. Trust that I’m still with you.”

Trust that His healing power is welling up inside you. Trust Him no matter what. No matter what.

And it’s going to require something from you: real courage.

It takes courage to believe God in the middle of the storm. It takes courage to believe Him when it doesn’t look like He’s coming through for you.

I’m suggesting that you really dig deep, because the liar is loud and the pain is loud. The sounds of the enemy are loud. You’ve got to dig deep. Really go deep. (Dig into these healing scriptures and let God’s Word be louder than the noise.)

God Proved His Love for You at the Cross

Amen. Trust Him. Trust in His love for you.

The Bible says that God proves His love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

ROMANS 5:8 But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.

He loved us while we were still sinners. Christ died for the whole world. That means He loves you.

The Bible tells us that God so loved the world that He gave His Son. He loved you before you were good, while you were still a sinner. (God still loves you.)

God wants you to believe in His love. Faith is everything. You have to believe. Trust that He loves you. Trust that He died for you. When you do, you will trust Him to heal you and to save you.

Don’t Believe the Lie Cancer and Depression Are Telling You

God is calling you to have faith in Him. He’s calling you to trust Him. He’s saying, “Trust Me.”

“Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you.” That was the enemy’s message. Today, the devil is saying, “God’s not for you.”

Don’t be deceived. The enemy says, “No one can rescue you from this disease I’m putting on you. No one can rescue you from this depression.”

That’s the lie of the enemy.

“Just as everyone else died from this disease, so will you.” That’s the enemy. That’s the lie.

That’s what Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, was saying. He claimed that no god of any nation or kingdom had ever been able to rescue his people from him or his ancestors.

That’s what cancer is saying to you. That’s what you’re hearing in your mind. Don’t believe it. Don’t believe the lie:

Maybe you are hearing, “Nobody gets rescued from cancer. This kind of cancer is deadly. Your grandmother died from this. Your great-grandfather died from this. What makes you think you’re going to be saved? What makes you think God cares about you? He didn’t care about your grandmother or your great-grandmother. What makes you think He cares about you? God couldn’t save your grandmother from me.”

That’s what cancer is saying to you. Or dementia. Or Alzheimer’s:

“Look at how many people are dying from Alzheimer’s. God didn’t save them. What makes you think He’s going to save you?”

That’s what the liar is saying. Don’t believe it. Trust God. Trust God.

It takes courage to trust God in the face of those lies. It takes courage to trust Him in the face of cancer. It takes courage to trust Him in the face of depression.

Trust God No Matter What the Odds and Statistics Say

Trust Him. Trust Him no matter what. No matter what the enemy says. No matter what the odds or statistics say. No matter what, trust God.

Maybe your grandmother didn’t trust God. Maybe your grandfather didn’t know God. Maybe the church didn’t trust God. That doesn’t mean you can’t trust Him. It doesn’t mean you aren’t trusting Him.

Today is a brand-new day. Today, courage is welling up inside you. You’re going to dig deeper. You’re going to press into Him. You’re going to believe Jesus. You’re going to believe that what He did mattered.

Jesus’ Blood Is More Powerful Than Anything Coming Against You

He paid for your sins. Jesus’ death bore the punishment for the whole world, including you. His death was the punishment that freed you from every sickness and disease.

Jesus’ death paid for your sins, your salvation, your forgiveness, and your freedom from sickness and disease. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.

God wants us to believe that. He’s saying, “I gave My Son. Believe it. I gave My Son. Now believe it. His blood was shed. Now believe that His blood covers you.”

Believe that His blood is more powerful than anything coming against you.

Hallelujah.
